Bayrd family plot, Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield, Mass.
Description
Photos show views of the Bayrd family plot in Lakeside Cemetery on North Avenue. The plot is located at the corner of Chestnut Avenue and Catalpa Avenue near the center of the cemetery.
E. Leonard Bayrd and his wife Ruth were well-known in Wakefield as owners of Bayrd's Indian Trading Post, which was located at 52 Main Street at the head of Lake Quannapowitt. The structure was designed and built in 1955 by Bayrd, a native American of the Narragansett tribe whose tribal name was Eagle Claw. The wood frame and stucco building was flanked by two stucco tepees painted in traditional patterns. The Bayrd family home was attached in the rear. The store sold native American artifacts and clothing. After their deaths in the early 1990s, the store closed and the contents were auctioned in November of 1991. The building was demolished on August 17, 1995.
