- Title
- Church Street looking east, Wakefield, Mass.
- Description
- Original photo taken sometime in the first decade of the 20th century. Current photo taken by Doug Heath, 2011.
- "An unpaved Church Street was photographed sometime between 1902 and 1908. We can estimate this time interval from three clues in the image. Can you see them? The first is the Soldiers and Sailors Monument shown as a white pillar at center right. It was dedicated by Governor Winthrop Crane on June 17, 1902. The second is the First Parish Congregational Church shown at left. It was destroyed by fire on February 21, 1909. The third clue is that the photograph was taken during the summer. So we can assume it was taken from the summer of 1902 to the summer of 1908. Unfortunately we don't know the photographer's name. The other image shows the same view taken in March 2011, over a century later." - caption provided by Doug Heath, contest winner.
