In 1900, Walter DeHaven and Gertrude Jones (nee Worth) lived at 245 Porter Street with their children, Stella and Dettmar. He worked in Melrose as a clerk of the board of selectmen under the old town government and in 1900, continued as the city clerk, clerk of the board of aldermen and clerk of committees for the City of Melrose. He also was leading member of the First Methodist Church and occupied the position of secretary of the board of trustees. He was active in various other philanthropic, military and social organizations. In 1885, he married Gertrude Mabel Worth, daughter of Henry and Hannah Worth of Melrose. They were married by John D. Pickles, Minister of the First Methodist church, whose name also appears on the quilt.
